Happy Birthday to Ellie!

How's your day? Hope you are having a good one, Ellie!

Aw, thanks! It was crappy earlier, because I had to deal with this asshole cop who is doing a background check on me for my internship. He kept calling me every five minutes demanding a new character reference because no one I gave him was answering the phone. I swear I gave him like ten names before he was satisfied talking to three. With my luck, I'll have to work closely with him in the internship.

But I've been preparing for the party we're throwing tonight (lots of fabulous dessert!), and I'm enjoying the storms outside! Tornado warning!

I was going to post this yesterday, but blogger won't let me do my own post on this computer. So comments it will be.

Yes, Happy Birthday, Ellie! I'm sorry I didn't call you, but I did get to talk to you the night before.

We've had significant flooding here in SE Minnesota. The town of Rushford was innundated. Haven't seen it yet, as it is still locked down, but terrible losses occured. So sad.

I'm also not sure exactly how the farm is going to fair. We've lost at least a third of anticipated revenue. But the hardest thing is thinking about all the work that goes into planting and maintaining a crop, especially vegetables. And now much of it is torn away. I biked back to one of our fields yesterday. Winter squash is strewn around the rivver banks, the vines twisted in the trees. So much food gone to waste.

But it could have been worse. My house stayed dry, the utilities are already back...and we do have some crops left. We'll see what happens.

Hey, Ellie, how was your party? I hope you didn't lose power from the storms, and that you had a good time.

And about what you said on your blog, about getting to prepare food as a present to yourself -- I felt the exact same way on my b-day! I was so excited that I got to make my own cake (a white cake with an orange cream cheese spread garnished with strawberries and blueberries) and yet everyone felt sorry for me. But I'd much rather have control of my own dessert. What all did you make?

The party was fun! The storm kept away about half the people who had RSVP-ed, but, you know, our apartment is so small, that maybe wasn't a bad thing. It was a nice small gathering of people I really enjoy.

I made minature dark chocolate cheesecakes, peach struesel pie, carrot-ginger cupcakes with cream cheese-candied ginger frosting, and the world's most delicious banana pudding. Tim thought so much sugar would cause people to convulse, so I also had some hummus and veggies, a taco dip, and my favorite appetizer: kalamata olive tapenade with Munster cheese on baguettes.
