wow, and now it's thanksgiving!
Holiday greetings, all. What's everyone up to this Thanksgiving? My parents are coming tomorrow, but I don't have to cook because we're all going to see Topher's family up in Naperville (Chicago suburb) on Thursday.
And as of this week, we're a month away from our approaching reunion. What's the plan? Can you tell I'm just a little eager?

I've been meaning to ask about that myself. As it happens, I have a family thing in KC before Christmas. We'll be home on Sunday, but I don't know what time, and that's Christmas Eve anyway. So I won't be able to do anything until after Xmas. I still really want to see you all, but I'll understand if it's not possible to change it.
Naperville, huh? Just for Thursday? I wish I didn't have to spend all of the holidays working on school stuff!
We're going to have Thanksgiving with family friends (Tim's best friend's family). It should be great. I'm making corn pudding and white russian cupcakes, because I'm assuming someone else will already be bringing pumpkin pie, and the cupcakes are Tim's sole suggestion every time I ask for dessert ideas.
I'm going to be in Kansas Dec. 20-27. I could do the get-together like we previously mentioned, on Saturday, or after Christmas. So who all will be in town?
I will be coming to Kansas on either Thursday or Friday before Xmas. I'll be in Topeka Xmas eve but in Marion by Xmas day thru maybe 27th? I kind of thought we settled on that Saturday.. but I'm flexible.
I am so lucky that steve volunteered to have us (mainly me) cook thanksgiving dinner in our new house for his side. I am not pleased. We have moved for the final time to a house all our own. It is a world away from the last house i think jennifer can vouch for that and it is much closer to her but still in wichita. We are still settling in and have hung a few pictures here and there. Not much of a reason to since we are going to have to paint all the walls. The paint is flat and not the kind that is kid friendly. The fingerprints dont wipe off or if they do so does the paint. I was planning on posting pics but the computer is taking a vakay and will hopefully be back soon very soon. Im pretty flexible except for steve will have half days of work.
If we have it on Saturday, maybe those of us still around Marion after Xmas can also get together for coffee or something on the 26th, too?
Then lets say saturday then. That way we can start ironing out the details!
Okay, in the past, we mentioned meeting late afternoon and eventually having dinner later at Ellie's parents' house. It would be nice to meet earlier in day, I think, in case some of us have to get back to families. All we need to say is time, place(s), and what each of us can bring! I propose meeting around 3ish, hanging out at various locales (?), then dinner....
But this is just to get discussion going. What I'm adamant about is deciding now so that time doesn't escape us and we end up doing nothing. I had a dream last night that Xmas passed before any of us realized it, and none of us saw one another. It made me sad.
I'm going to be in Kansas starting Wednesday night before Christmas, so I'll have lots of time to cook and bake!
I was thinking about a Greek meal. I haven't had spanokopita in a loooong time, or tabouli, or baklava. I could make the items requiring filo dough. I love cooking, having company, etc, but I know it's sometimes funner for everyone if I *don't* make everything, so we can potluck it.
I do know on MY agenda for Saturday is getting a cute new haircut from Sarah! (Oooh, maybe some color, too? You can go wild on my hair if you want to!)
What else do we want to do besides dinner at my house?
If weather is okay, were we planning to do anything as a memorial for Mariah? I know that Jen had mentioned that possibility, but I'm not sure on particulars in mind. By the way, I did hear that weather may we warmer by that week, so being out and about that afternoon could be possible.
And Greek food sounds divine, Ellie! Maybe we could come over to your house earlier in the day? I know that my only other plans that day involve a wedding reception in Florence, but I'll be free as a bird by 2/3ish.
We could help in the kitchen! or at least drink and taste test and chat it up while you cooked.... ;)

I know Hannah can't join us on Saturday; I'd rather not do a memorial without her.
If the weather's not hideous, I'd love to go for a walk--or maybe a drive--in the country.
Aw, remember the Sunday morning after a campout--we all went to my church because I was being baptized, then we careened around the flint hills afterwards, doing nothing but driving and talking?
Winter walks are my favorite! Sounds lovely. And yes, I remember that Sunday morning SO vividly! And how we all smelled like campfire! It would be fun to look at pictures from that day again.
Hmm i think that is what we spent a lot of time doing. Now i dont know if i could find my way around on the backroads we used to drive. Sigh. Although maybe it would all come flooding back. Are we in agreement then saturday 3ish or so @ ellies everybody bring something? I make a tasty cross between a fattoush and greek salad. I think that would go well. Note the word salad thus involving no cooking.
Yeah, it will all come flooding back when you're fender deep in mud and some sheriff is laughing at you in the background of your phone call to Markley's.
We can wait on the memorial. What is latest date everyone is home?
I'll be home until the morning of the 27th.
I think we'll be around Marion until the 27th, too. The 28th is our 10th anniversary, so we'll either be back in CU by then or doing our usual anniversary outing to Lawrence. (Yes, really. I'm already trying to convince Topher that we need to eat at the Mad Greek, if it's still as good as I remember.)
And backroads! Oooh, ooh, I have a story! I should have known better, but one year, home on spring break, I picked up Kristine and we spent the evening in Marion, doing I don't remember what. Anyway, it had just rained, and my parents had told me to take the longer way around home from K's so I would avoid an un-rocked road. BUT past midnight, I drop her off and decide I am just too tired to take the long way (which would have been, oh, 3 whole minutes longer!). So I proceed down the bad road and five minutes later, I am STUCK -- I mean, up to the wheel wells -- in nothing but mud, baby. My parents had put one of those now-defunct car phones in the trunk, so I got to call them, early in the morning, and my dad had to come pull me out. The next day, the car had to be towed to Smitty's and the tires had to be removed to get all the mud out. Yay. This happened over 10 years ago, and THEY STILL LOVE TO REMIND ME! I often wonder what they would do if I had been in any worse situations. So only rocked roads for me now -- and I'm not sure if I even take that other road to Kristine's in good weather when I'm home visiting.
Still, I love the back roads and miss taking more of them now. But we're trying to seek some out around here.... because we finally got our pick-up!
Hey, does anyone else remember this? Ten years ago, Dec 21st, Ellie had a winter solstice party at her house. Wow, this will REALLY be a tried and true ten-year reunion for us.:)
Wasn't that at Hannah's house? Or was that in high school?
I adore celebrating the solstice. Usually Tim and I celebrate the solstices and equinoxes, but the next best thing will be old friends!
I daresay it was at my house, although you all seem to remember it better than I do. I made pizza, I remember, and cut the vegetables into star shapes? Is this right?
Well, I hope we can get together after christmas, since I won't make it before. But I hope you all have a rolicking good time.
I think we could manage that it would be good to see you again. I think the last time I saw Lesley was 3 years ago in front of the museum on old settlers day. I was trying to fight the overwhelming feeling of nausea. I was pregnant with Ian at the time.
It's funny what some of us remember and some of us don't -- I must have missed the party at Hannah's. But I do remember seeing you at OSD that one year, Sarah -- that must have been our high school ten-year reunion. And yes, Hannah, let's plan a post-Xmas something! I'll throw something out there: What about meeting in Newton or something on the 26th? There would be more possiblities for coffee/lunch/shopping at Prairie Harvest or ETC shop..... :)
