Confessions of a nonmusic lover
I must confess i dont love music, like yes, love no. I once went a year without listening to the radio. I can remember being indifferent to what we would listen to when we were hanging out. Probably because i liked it ok it just wasnt an interest. I didnt have study music i needed silence. There are very few songs that i have liked enough to buy the cd or tape once upon a time.i could always figure out a better way to spend the $15 or more than on a cd. I got Lesley's cd and with an open mind i listened to it twice. I'm sorry to admit that i dont like folk music. That might be part of not liking the indigo girls either. On Le's i remembered most of them from hs. I think i went a completely different way than everyone else with what i like in music. Im a collective soul stp better than ezra type girl with a little tonic bsb shakira and britney spears mixed in for good measure.

For the record, I really like Shakira. :) And I can completely get why you wouldn't like indigo girls (I can only listen to their older stuff now for nostalgic reasons -- their newer stuff just grates on my nerves)
I always knew that when it all came down, none of our tastes in music were the same. For example, I know that Jennifer and I never really listened to the same stuff, exactly -- I remember her listening to the Pixies and I didn't even know who they were. And for some reason (although others seem to remember differently) I don't remember Jen liking B-52's OR (on the other end of spectrum) Dar Williams. Am I right? wrong? delusional? Jen? In other words, there were a lot of different songs getting passed around -- and while I never assumed everyone loved it all, maybe some of us were (ok, I was) a bit, um, vocal about what we thought was good in terms of music. I feel bad that your own tastes got bulldozed when we hung out.
Music is so essential for me -- and now, since our blog has started up, I'm trying to make it even more important to me and find new artists, listen to different stuff, etc. Also, I'm thinking that NOT listening to a radio may mean you like actual music more than you think! (I am amazed at how I can know every single top 40 song in every category even if I only listen to the radio when I'm in the car for short periods of time. It really is 'hearing the same damn song everywhere I go') :)
Oh, yeah, and Britney! Almost downloaded "My Prerogative" the other night. So mix everything in you can, Sarah!
Oh how I have missed Sarah's unapologetic bluntness!!
I don't really listen to the radio, unless is the news or weekend programming on NPR. Well, I guess I sometimes listen the oldies station that's down here when I'm driving--if Bobby Puppione, the most annoying public radio reporter ever, is doing the Alabama Report at the time. (His stupid voice makes me want to poke out my ear drums. And his dumb rhyming name.)
Anyway, my knowledge of music is solely from the past, music I grew up with, the stuff I've gleaned from music nerd ex-boyfriends and Tim's vast, encyclopedic knowledge of music.
Oh. But I guess I'm a music lover nonetheless. But I tend to stick with what I know, because I can't afford to keep buying new CDs, and I'm pretty lazy. Pandora.com is the greatest thing that ever happened to me, I think. I am becoming verrrry obsessed with it.
And then there's me, the music slut. I do like some Dar Williams and I do like the B 52's. I just have to love something to own it. I did download the one we were talking about though by Natasha Bedingfield, of course I also downloaded tobymac, britney spears, beyonce, missy elliot and some gospel. I'm all over the musical map. I like not being limited by the radio. I have something to fit every mood. Which is weird, because cat and zan are more like sarah. They like music, but don't love it like I do.
As for radio, I listen to country, NPR (but only when there is talking. I can't stand to have music with no words when I'm driving. I fall asleep.), some retro, some hard stuff, and of courses the hip hop top 40 station. I like old stuff too, beatles, elo, molly hatchet, elton john, statler brothers and host of others. I couldn't imagine not having music to listen and study too. When I was still in art classes I would listen to megadeth, pantera, faster pussycats and dokken while I painted. Now, not so much. I evolve and some things I like change. It's like a wardrobe. The music that will stay in style I keep and still listen too, other stuff is trendy and I listen to for awhile and move on to the new trends that update my classic stuff.
And Sarah, while I love you, I don't think I could have handled any more of that bryan adam's summer of 69 cd.
I cant help the bluntness. It has always been part of who i am. Im all about getting to the point. By the way summer of 69 was not the only song i played it was just the only one you ever heard. That was the summer i was sad. You guys never stifled my taste in music it wasnt that big of a deal to me.
That was the only song I didn't like. The rest are okay. I should know, Marc has the same album!
Okay, this is just how stupid I am: I actually had to accept the fact that I could like pop music or crossover country. Like, I literally had to tell myself it was "okay" if I liked, say, a new song by SheDaisy or Rob Thomas or Kelly Clarkson. (Maybe this is what Jen talked about with turning 30? a kind of no-apologies way of going through the details of life? you're not so worried what people think? hmmm) Anyway, I thought, well hey! It doesn't make me a bad person if I like pop music! At the same time, I get antsy if I hear the same catchy song over and over. It's also nice to have music that's more meaningful, the kind that you can't blast in the car in the short trip between the grocery store and post office.
So I LOVE what Jen said about music being like a wardrobe -- that's exactly it. There are CDs I love that never make it to the car, and there are ones that live there.
So, if music is a wardrobe --- then what is everyone's favorite, worn out pair of jeans? Just curious. ;)
Aw, Summer of 69. For some reason, I always feel nostalgic when that song comes on. I thought I just liked songs that sounded like oldies, but maybe it's because of you, Sarah!
I'm trying to interpret "favorite, worn out pair of jeans."
John Renbourn will always remind me of childhood.
Ani's "Little Plastic Castles" will always take me back to the feeling of being new in Chicago, Little Miss Independent, the world at my feet waiting to be discovered.
I guess I mean a classic, perennial favorite -- like, the album/artist/song that never goes out of style for you. The one that you know will be what you want to hear every time you play it... and one that's not necessarily connected to a certain time or place (but it could be). I think Sting may be it for me -- whenever I don't know what to put on, then the choice is always Sting. Probably "Soul Cages" -- but even his new stuff is always perfect.
Hmmm, maybe me asking this question here is horrible when Sarah's post is all about not loving music. Sorry!
Damn the summer of 69!
My favorite musical jeans:
Prince of Deep Water CD by The Blessing
Blackhawk CD by Blackhawk
Carnival Natalie Merchant
That reminds me, Lesley; I burned some of the CDs you posted about on your blog.
It was a way of torture just for you jennifer. For my lack of love of music i make up for my love of movies. One of my very favs is on right now austin powers i love all 3. I laugh every time i watch them. Steve fails to find them as amusing. Sorry lesley i loved bridget jones the first more than the second
Did I post something about Bridget Jones and forget? I do like the first one -- but I just saw the second one a few weeks ago & it totally sucked. Edge of Reason is the worst movie I've ever seen. Right up there -- or down there -- with The Village and the 2nd & 3rd Matrix installments.
I just got Ellie´s CD...it was missent to Jakarta, which I find immensely pleasing. It´s really been all over the world. I love it.
