o christmas tree

I added another pic of this year's tree (to the left). See, it's the same thing!

This was our Christmas tree from last year (on the right). And really, I have it in the same spot this year, with pretty much same ornaments -- so not much has changed. I do miss the few years when Topher and I had a real tree. But I don't miss watering it and vacuuming up the needles!

Sarah and Jennifer, if you look closely, you will observe numerous Blount-created and inspired gems! And the Victorian Santa was a gift from Catie and Garrett's Aunt Janet. And note the Ronda Reindeer circa 1983 or something. I love the way stories can be told through Christmas ornaments -- and you don't need Hallmark to do it for you.

Lovely. I miss the ornaments we grew up with. We have none now, for I've never had my own tree before. I don't mind much (and decided decorating this year was just too much trouble) but maybe we should get in the habit in case we ever have kids.

beautiful tree, Les!
dave and i got our first christmas tree this year! an 8-footer, Scotch Pine. We've been collecting ornaments the last 3 years, even though we weren't able to use them... but i'm so glad we've been doing that.
Otherwise, we'd be spending bundles on decorations... and hallmark would be cashing in our paychecks. ;)

Our tree (yes, finally broke down and bought a fake one...the sky did NOT fall) is 7 feet tall and is not nearly as beautiful or full of ornaments as your tree, Lesley...but Jason says this is ok since Asher will start making Christmas ornaments soon and that will help fill it up. Right now it has both Jason's and my ornaments from back home which our mothers lovingly packed up for us, plus a bunch of strands of red wooden round beads instead of tinsel garlands. But I would like to do something with ribbon too...is that what I see on yours? And I also have little red bows on it this year which are cute. It's kinda homey looking.

I'm developing a Christmas snow globe collection too which is on top of my piano right now. Jason's mom has started getting one for me and for my sister-in-law every Christmas. She's cute like that. We're up to 5 now, 6 if you count the one that's coming in a couple weeks.

Yes, we had to buy some "filler" ornaments last year -- but what works really nice is that wired ribbon. You rope it around like lights and it fills in those spaces nicely.

I've only ever done a traditional red and gold tree. What's funny is I can't wait to have enough room for a second tree -- insane, I know. My mother puts up three -- a blue and silver one, one more like ours, and I'm honestly not sure what the third one is she has this year! But after years and years of teaching, elementary and Sunday school, she had TONS of ornaments that she got from students. She just keeps pulling more and more out every year! One time, we catalogued them all -- writing down who gave which one to whom and when and for what reason, etc. I took most of my ornaments with me, but there are some that I had her keep b/c I like to come home and see them on their tree.

We have a surplus of Christmas ornaments and decorations because we got married in December! Many of our gifts were Christmas-related, which I loved. And I always hit after-Christmas sales to buy more stuff for next year.

And LeAnn, you may not have ever been fan of that Polar Express movie that came out last year (kinda charming, kinda creepy film), but they made a really beautiful snow globe with a tree in the center that lights up and plays a train sound when you tip it. My parents got it for us last year. Anyway, I was thinking of you guys when I put it out and wondering if you were still collecting snow globes. I think it's cool to have a collection like that -- we try to buy a new special ornament for our tree every year. (I want more Rudolph ones!)

We never saw Polar Express but I wouldn't mind seeing it. I kinda wish I had started collecting Nativity stuff...I really like creches from different cultures and countries. Snow globes are cool too though.

Yeah, Polar Express is actually quite enjoyable -- and the whole sleigh bell as the first gift of Christmas makes me cry cry cry. (See emotions post for more detail on Lesley's emotional flood gates, et al) :) Incidently, sleigh bells are a big thing for my mom, too. She heard bells on Christmas Eve once when she was a little girl. And she's a pretty rational person, so the fact that she INSISTS that she heard them makes me a pretty firm believer in Santa, however cheesy that makes me.

AND LeAnn! Speaking of movies, did you guys get out to see Narnia yet? Toph and I went on Sunday -- I was thinking of you the whole time! :)

And maybe at this point, snow globes are better in terms of a collection. Case in point: I have a beautiful porcelain Nativity set that I don't even have in my own house (read: now graces my mother's piano), because of lack of space and fears of crazy cat antics. And that's just one nativity set. A bunch of them would necessitate a lot of space and careful set up. You could keep it as a definite goal though! I, too, love Nativities. (And for the record, I love the word creche! It reminds me of high school French class and the fun we had.)

I am quite proud of myself. I put up a string of not quite broken lights, and made a wreath for the front door. It´s right festive, and if I had a digital camera, I´d take a picture of it. But I don´t. Just thought I´d share.
