Coming Home to Kansas

6.14.2006

how is everyone? what's up? the blog has been quiet and I miss you all.

Aside from getting ready to move, we are pretty ho-hum here. I'm continuing to write my dissertation -- I'm nearly done with my second chapter and hope to have the third drafted by the end of summer -- and Topher is keeping on, keeping on at work, designing levels to a game that will be the sequel to one his company will release this August.

We've been winding down in the evenings to episodes of Deadwood -- really good western series from HBO. It's gritty and sleazy, to say the least, but seems like the most authentic western-themed show I've ever seen. The characters and stories are really well-written, as long as you can just get past some fiercely obscene language. We are a season behind. But we need to start Veronica Mars! Is anyone else watching anything good right now? Movies?

This morning is slower for me than most -- I've put off writing until this afternoon.
Last night, I got a wild hair and started writing a short story. Not about anything in particular. I wonder what it will be. Summer does that to me. Has anyone else written anything as of late? Thought about writing/drawing/creating anything? I am just being pesky and curious.

Hope you are all doing well!

I haven't been doing much. Browsing the paint swatches and deciding on paneling. Just dealing with the insurance company after Steve was hit by another car. If I didn't tell Steve how it was going to be done we'd still be messing around waiting for them to decide whether or not they were paying for the damage. Finding homes for the puppies. Steve's puppies, but I am the one that has to git r done. I still have one puppy left just for you Lesley! He would look so cute romping through your new yard!

You did have a hard weekend, Sarah. I kept meaning to check on how things were going via your blog. What a pain!!! I hope you get stuff straightened out with insurance -- and also don't have to worry about the city coming down on you too hard when Bear got out.

And Gretchen, are you going to be in Kansas by/over the 4th? Topher and I are going to be shuffling b/w Topeka and Marion from July 1-5 -- for anyone who might be around and up for a quick visit!

p.s. We closed on our house yesterday! yay!

Yay Lesley! I can't wait to see pictures when you're in the home!

I just got back from a week in Chicago. Katie was so surprised when I showed up for her graduation. I also did some apartment hunting (Hannah? Are you still speaking to me?) and have permanently altered the chemical makeup of my brain by the amount of panic I experienced during it all. At one of the apartments, Katie noticed a police camera on a telephone pole at the street corner. Ack. And that was the one in our price range . . .

I have not experienced many things in life more stressful than trying to find an apartment in Chicago. (And I am not even exaggerating that much.) Oh dear god. And I've already booked the moving truck for July 31.

But to balance that out, I got to spend time with Hannah, my family (learned how to play Guitar Hero), ate fabulous food (and lots of bagels), and met my nephew Milo, who is just about the most precious creature I've ever encountered in my LIFE.

But now I'm back in Montgomery for six more weeks, and depressed and stressed; I am knocked out with a cold, and work is, well . . . only six more weeks!

OH. But I did visit the hospital where I'll be interning once school starts, and it was only about ten minutes into the visit when I thought, "I hope they like me as an intern so they can hire me once I graduate!" I am crazy excited about it; it seems like a really perfect fit for me.

Guitar Hero!!! Topher has that game and finds it very addictive. How did you like it, Ellie?

Hang in there for six more weeks, and good luck with your move. I keenly remember our move from KS to IL, and I don't envy you your trip. But once you're settled, all will be great!

That is exciting now the fun of moving begins. The last time we moved in about a day. Packing and everything included. That's why we aren't in any hurry to move.

Elly just think only 6 more weeks left it will go by before you know it. I look at June as just about over and then boom it's July.

I am just hoping to have my car put back together at least some what in less than 6 weeks. The damage isn't so bad and I think that Steve can fix it and we can get the part to fix the window. I had a total wtf moment when I was looking up parts and prices earlier that I was going to need (hubcap, fender trim). I happened upon the window regulator. Just the part I am needed fixed which caused the window to shatter when it broke. THe place I am/was going to have it fixed wants to charge me $260 the part is $89. Granted if I get it around here it maybe more expensive than on the internet, but not that much. That is insane. And for the record the insurance company has accepted responsibility for the accident and the check is in the mail. We are going to pay the car off and use the rest to fix it. Steve has done body work and it isn't as bad as it sounds at least for the estimated $2600 plus damage. I will take a pic and post it on my blog. At least all the parts will be mine when they break off!

My whole family is addicted to Guitar Hero now. I have some hilarious pictures. My poor dad, though, the actual guitar player of the bunch, couldn't seem to get the hang of it. I can't wait for Tim to hear me do "Higher Ground" (though actually that's probably fairly unimpressive, considering he really can play that on the bass).

I've started packing already, and it makes me feel very industrious and organized, though it has caused some arguments as to what I should and should not pack this far in advance.
