Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day! Now that I'm trying to avoid sugar, this holiday isn't what it's cracked up to be.

Really, my favorite memories of V-day come from us in high school, giving each other those flowers in the glass bowls. I blogged about other memories, but those really were the best.

Tonight there is a benefit performance of the first years' "Treasure Island" (I heard that despite their talented efforts, the play sucks), and I'm going to bartend for it beforehand.

I might also pick up a pizza from our favorite organic cafe, and negate the healthiness of it by piling tons of cheese on my pieces.

This all is fancy for us.

You know, I have to admit, I hated V-Day in high school (big surprise). I remember getting carnations from you all, I think - wasn't that all wrapped up with homecoming and some cheerleader fundraiser?? Anyway, I always felt so glum, all those flowers in the office and the number of flowers you got was all bound up in status, yadda yadda (hmmm resentful much, Lesley? perhaps the REAL reason behind me being in plays in h.s. -- better guarantee on flowers. :)

To be honest, I don't exactly loathe this holiday anymore (that's a bit cliche) but I don't really get hung up on it. We have an appointment at our bank (about house loans) then probably just home to collapse, order pizza, and watch a movie? Too much going on this week.

I should say, however, that the best Valentine's gift I got was my pair of Doc Martens from Toph nine years ago. I guess this indicates that the flowers really weren't my thing anyway.... :)

I neither love nor hate Valentine's Day. Jason got me one of those cool food gift boxes from Harry and David this year which pretty much tells you that we live for dessert around this house. I like getting things to eat for gifts because then I don't have a stuffed animal that I feel obligated to keep around. I'm not big on stuffed animals.

My town had a party for dia de amistad...it´s more about friendship than anything else. And, they turned it into a going away party for me. It was kind of cool, looking back on it, though it was awkward when it was actually happening. They made cakes, and passed around little cups of champagne and grapes with toothpicks in them. And the kids gave some dance performances...one little girl gave me a bouquet of flowers from their garden, which made me happier than any purchased gift could have. A lot of the florist flowers in the world come from ecuador, and they are produced with so many pesticides and at such low wages that I´ll never feel right about buying them again.
